We work for you. We provide electric service to 1.8 million customers and natural gas service to 1.7 million customers in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. All told, we serve more than 6 million Michiganders. Best job ever.
We produce much of the electricity you need right here in Michigan. Our plants use a variety of fuel sources. Having a diverse fuel mix enables us to better manage costs to keep your bills manageable. We buy 100% of the natural gas we need and use our unique storage fields to buy and store natural gas when prices are lowest. This keeps your bills lower too.
We’re moving aggressively, changing the way we generate electricity so we can make Michigan’s tomorrows even better. By the year 2040 our plan is to eliminate the use of coal to generate electricity and reduce carbon emissions by 90%. We’re also pushing hard toward another 2040 goal, where 40% of our electric generation will come from renewable sources and energy storage. It’s a balanced energy approach to secure a more sustainable future for all of us.
Natural Gas Operations
Most of the natural gas we use comes from outside of Michigan, like the Gulf Coast, Texas and Kansas. It’s a long trek from the well to your home, with many stops and pressure changes along the way. And there’s the matter of odorizing so that it’s incredibly obvious in the unlikely event of a leak.
