We coined the term “Printiques” to describe print techniques so special they’re worthy of their own anagram. Techniques like Strike-Thru or Reticulating varnishes that can make your image jump off the page. Coatings like Spot UV Gloss or SoftTouch that can make your project feel like velvet and ColorLogic special effects that simulate hundreds of shimmering colors all in one press run.
UV Printing can be summed up in one word; versatility. In UV printing, inks become instantly cured when exposed to Ultra Violet light and sheets come off the press completely dry allowing them to be worked or shipped immediately. What’s more is that UV allows us to print on some of the most difficult materials in the world. Substrates like plastics, synthetic papers, polyesters and vinyls can be impossible to print using conventional methods. We are even able to produce dynamic lenticular and 3D motion pieces because of the Ultra Violet process. UV printing also offers benefits to jobs that are printed on paper. Dry trapping can produce shaper images and, on uncoated stocks, heavy solids are no longer a concern.
More than just containers that hold a product; manufacturers know that packaging is the most direct form of communication with their consumers. Advertisers and marketers have long understood the relationship between clever promotional pieces and sales. Whether you’re talking about boxes for chocolates or mailers designed as intricate pop-up trays, we say, paper or plastic? Here at Tepel Brothers we offer both. And, while others mainly outsource these types of jobs, we produce them start to finish in-house. Our production departments are equipped with Heidelberg UV presses enabling specialty print techniques and high-tech Bobst die cutters and folder/gluers with in-line PUR glue capabilities.
You may not think much about printing on plastic, but if your work involves Point of Purchase materials, chances are you think about it all of the time. The majority of POP products are now produced using plastic substrates and our UV capabilities make it all possible. Back-lit displays, window clings, hang tags, shelf talkers, floor graphics, plastic sleeves, lenticular printing and packaging are some examples of the types of things we print on plastics today. And, because we have so much experience with plastics in the pressroom, we’ve become experts in working with the materials in the finishing process. We can die cut, fold, PUR glue, assemble and package plastics. Simply put, printing on plastic substrates is an entirely different ballgame.
When printing on a wide variety of substrates, the time to find out about a problem is not on press. Inks and coatings have to look right and adhesion must be acceptable, otherwise, the job will fail. Some modern substrates are incredibly expensive and nearly impossible to use. So, how can you tell what will work? The common method is trial and error, but not the one we subscribe to. Here at Tepel Brothers, we like to say that research and development is the art of making the impossible work. We have invested heavily in creating our own testing laboratory and equipped it with the latest testing equipment. One feature of our R&D department is an IST UV Curing System that matches the curing capabilities of our presses. This allows us to produce draw-downs using the actual substrates, inks and coatings specified for your job.
Seems like everyone is talking about “Going Green” these days. We agree it’s a good thing for the environment and we took the initiative to be “Green” long before it was the popular thing to do. Each year we send approximately 650 tons of paper scrap back to the mills for recycling and salvage over 30,000 metal plates. Our conventional printing inks are soy content and solvent free; the lowest VOC inks available. Our UV inks are cured with ultraviolet energy so they’re 100% VOC free. Even our presses are environmentally friendly; both Heidelberg XL105s and the XL75 require 60% less solvent during operation than other presses. And, we’ve installed a Beta F filtration systems that allows us to extend the life span of the water used in the printing process from one week to nine months.
Tepel Brothers is an FSC Certified printer, furthering our commitment to the green concept. The Forest Stewardship Council is the most rigorous, credible forest certification program worldwide. We also actively support local environmental groups like The Greening of Detroit, a not-for-profit organization established to guide and inspire the reforestation of Detroit.
