Kentucky governor signs bill legalizing medical cannabis

Kentucky will be the next state to legalize a medical marijuana program.

According to Fox 17:

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has signed legislation legalizing medical cannabis in the state.

Senate Bill 47 was passed by the Kentucky General Assembly earlier this month by votes of 26-11 in the Senate and 39 to 15 in the House with 46 members not voting.

The bill creates legalizes medical cannabis in the state and creates a regulation structure.

In a press release on the signing, Gov. Beshear states “In November, I signed an executive order to help Kentuckians with certain medical conditions, like our veterans suffering from PTSD, find safe and effective relief through medical cannabis. Now, I am finally able to sign this legislation into law and fully legalize medical cannabis – something the majority of Kentuckians support.”

The law goes into effect an Jan. 1, 2025. For the time being, Kentuckians who suffer from a list of 21 medical conditions will be able to access medical cannabis from out of state.
